19 Oct How to overcome Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome through natural means
Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome or PCOS is a hormone-based condition that affects numerous women across the world. People with polycystic ovarian syndrome have an imbalanced hormone production which affects the body in multiple ways and causes numerous symptoms. It causes mild discomfort at best, or may even become moderately incapacitating in severe cases.
PCOS or PCOD is seen in females of reproductive age. Women with this condition usually experience prolonged and irregular menstrual cycles. This is due to excess male hormones and insufficient female hormones in the body which leads to the formation of numerous follicles and results in irregular release of eggs from the ovary.
Cause of PCOS
The primary cause of PCOS is poor metabolic health from lack of physical activity and poor diet. Often PCOS is seen as a part of significant weight gain. Excess insulin, inflammation and heredity are also causes for weight gain and PCOS.
Complications of PCOS
- Gestational diabetes or pregnancy-induced high blood pressure.
- Miscarriage or premature birth.
- Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis — severe inflammation caused by fat accumulation in the liver.
- Metabolic syndrome: a cluster of conditions like high blood pressure, high blood sugar, and abnormal cholesterol or triglyceride levels that significantly increase the risk of cardiovascular disease.
- Type 2 diabetes or prediabetes.
- Sleep apnea.
- Depression, anxiety and eating disorders.
- Abnormal uterine bleeding.
- Cancer of the uterine lining (endometrial cancer).
Common medications are birth control methods like birth control pills. Another popular medication is progestin. Taking such medications have their own side effects.
The best treatment is exercise and a healthy diet. Exercising helps in lowering insulin levels and improving fat mobilization. Simple exercises like walking, cycling, jogging can help a lot. It is important to follow a low carb diet with emphasis on good nutrition. A diet that is rich in high fiber foods, high quality fats (eggs, organ meats, coconut oil, olive oil, omega 3, etc) and low in carbs can help in reducing insulin levels and thus eliminating the cause. Reduce the intake of packed and processed foods, sugary beverages.
