How to overcome Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome through natural means

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome or PCOS is a hormone-based condition that affects numerous women across the world. People with polycystic ovarian syndrome have an imbalanced hormone production which affects the body in multiple ways and causes numerous symptoms. It causes mild discomfort at best, or may even become moderately incapacitating in severe cases.

PCOS or PCOD is seen in females of reproductive age. Women with this condition usually experience prolonged and irregular menstrual cycles. This is due to excess male hormones and insufficient female hormones in the body which leads to the formation of numerous follicles and results in irregular release of eggs from the ovary.

Cause of PCOS

The primary cause of PCOS is poor metabolic health from lack of physical activity and poor diet. Often PCOS is seen as a part of significant weight gain. Excess insulin, inflammation and heredity are also causes for weight gain and PCOS.

Complications of PCOS

  • Infertility.
  • Gestational diabetes or pregnancy-induced high blood pressure.
  • Miscarriage or premature birth.
  • Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis — severe inflammation caused by fat accumulation in the liver.
  • Metabolic syndrome: a cluster of conditions like high blood pressure, high blood sugar, and abnormal cholesterol or triglyceride levels that significantly increase the risk of cardiovascular disease.
  • Type 2 diabetes or prediabetes.
  • Sleep apnea.
  • Depression, anxiety and eating disorders.
  • Abnormal uterine bleeding.
  • Cancer of the uterine lining (endometrial cancer).
  • Obesity

Medication

Common medications are birth control methods like birth control pills. Another popular medication is progestin. Taking such medications have their own side effects.

Treatment

The best treatment is exercise and a healthy diet. Exercising helps in lowering insulin levels and improving fat mobilization. Simple exercises like walking, cycling, jogging can help a lot. It is important to follow a low carb diet with emphasis on good nutrition. A diet that is rich in high fiber foods, high quality fats (eggs, organ meats, coconut oil, olive oil, omega 3, etc) and low in carbs can help in reducing insulin levels and thus eliminating the cause. Reduce the intake of packed and processed foods, sugary beverages.

Yoga Asanas Recommended by Ayurveda for PCOS treatment

Ayurveda and Yoga recommends a combination of yoga asanas to help people suffering from PCOS to relax. You can practice specific yoga asanas such as

Nadi Shuddhi Pranayama or Alternate Nostril Breathing
Vipareeta Karani Asana – Inverted Pose
Cat and Cow Stretch
Butterfly Pose or Badhakonasana
Malasana or Garland Pose
Chakki Chalanasana or Mill Churning Pose
Paschimottanasana or Seated Forward Bend
Malasana with raise hands
Upavistha Konasana or Wide-Angle Seated Forward Bend
Butterfly legs with chest open
Gentle twist or Variation of Bharadvaja asana
Pawanmuktasana or Gas Release Pose

Yoga and dietary modifications can help manage the condition.

Yoga helps in regulating the endocrine glands, and thereby helps in balancing the hormones. Yoga keeps the uterus and the ovaries healthy and resolves issues like infertility, weight gain, and psychological problems. Meditation can help in stabilizing the mind and has a calming effect.

Ayurveda to fight PCOS

According to Ayurveda, both men and women have Shukra Dhatu (semen), which keeps the reproductive health of a person in check. Imbalance in the androgen levels (male) and estrogen levels (female) may cause infertility.

Ayurvedic treatment makes use of herbs to boost fertility and maintain hormonal balance, along with various therapies and a balanced diet, which helps in overcoming PCOS-related problems.

Ayurvedic treatment for PCOS involves a blend of herbs for

  • Strengthening reproductive system
  • Controlling resistance to insulin
  • Facilitating hormonal balance
  • Providing relief for inflammation arising due to the appearance of cysts on the ovaries.
  • Solving other issues like digestive disorders, weight gain, insulin sensitivity, etc.

One of the ayurvedic herbs that helps in treatment for PCOS is Shatavari. It is rich in vitamins (A, B1, B2, C, E, folic acid) and minerals (magnesium, phosphorus, calcium, and iron), which makes this herb a perfect antioxidant to protect the reproductive system in females. Shilajit is a great immunity booster and helps in protecting the reproductive system in women.

Turmeric improves insulin resistance, detoxifies the female reproductive system, eliminates acne, etc.

Lodhra regulates ovarian hormones and improves fertility. Meshashringi is used to maintain uterine health. It is known to improve insulin sensitivity and has anti-diabetic properties. Ashoka herb aids in repairing the endometrium and helps to heal the damage to its sensitive lining due to inflammation. It also regulates estrogen levels. It also has anti-microbial and anti-fungal properties, which help in protecting the urinary tract from bacterial and fungal (especially Candida) infections.

Vrikshamla has a lot of hydroxy citric acid (HCA), which is beneficial for improving exercise performance. It also helps in weight loss by keeping appetite in check. Ashwagandha or Indian ginseng is an ayurvedic herb that can help balance cortisol levels which helps our body to cope better with stress, one of the problems linked with PCOD.

Holy basil or Tulsi has anti-androgenic properties that help in preventing weight gain and balancing the testosterone levels. Chewing its leaves lowers glucose levels in the blood, which can help fend off diabetes-related problems in women with PCOD.

Tribulus Terrestris is a herbal medicine for PCOD that helps stimulate ovulation and support healthy menstruation. It is considered one of the most effective ayurvedic remedies for ovarian cysts.

Cumin seeds have a compound called phytoestrogen that acts like estrogen. Estrogen deficiency is a major cause of PCOD, and regular consumption of cumin seeds can help cure the insufficiency.

Indian gooseberries or Amla can balance hormone and cholesterol levels. Its anti-inflammatory properties help in keeping the heart healthy and bad cholesterol away.

Along with ayurvedic medicines for PCOD, diet should also be taken care of. Anti-inflammatory food like turmeric, sweet potatoes, green leafy vegetables, ginger, onions, etc can help to manage the symptoms of PCOD.

Fighting obesity is also important to live a PCOD free life. Exercise, a healthy lifestyle and proper diet will help in dealing with the weight problems well.

Ayurvedic Therapies practiced to treat PCOS

Basti (Herbal Enema): Enema of medicated oil or decoction is introduced through the rectum. It helps in releasing vitiated vatta, which causes health problems like PCOS.

Virechan (Herbal cleansing): This is also called ayurvedic detox. It helps in expelling toxins such as vitiated pitta out of the body.

Vaman (Herbal vomiting): This therapy is to get rid of toxins in the upper body through mouth by vomiting. It is a painless procedure.
